Greetings readers, I will be sharing my journey with the rest of my crew on our social project conducted for the communities of CG MALAYA and American Association of Petroleum Geologists University Malaya Student Chapter (AAPG UM SC).

Pre-event

The first 4 weeks was filled with briefing sessions which was meant to strengthen the understanding for students that are required to participate in this project. Confusions has been raised throughout this duration as the overall implementation of this project was yet to be clearly highlighted. I believe this situation were faced by many of the teams involved. The e-learning phase has impacted the standard procedure for these sort of  events. Previously, student would be engaging the community physically which showcased infinite possibilities of developing a unique programs tailored for the group. This option is not the privilege that we can enjoy anymore, physical events has been discarded and replaced virtually which limits the interaction between community. However, we as a team did not give up and tried to look for opportunities that can be done to maximize the input we intended to deliver. Personally, I feel like the team has been always on a lookout especially looking for the specified communities and topics to be conducted. After almost the briefing, the process of acquiring the initial ingredients to perform the event is done. The team representative have been sent out to search for a community and discussions regarding proper direction of the event was initiated. After 2 weeks, CG Malaya and AAPG UM SC were seemingly interested in our program as reference to our proposal thus, the Canva poster workshop progress has officially started. The direction of the event consists of the content and modules involved in the execution of the event. Apart from that, a competition in relation with this event which revolves around student creating their own poster from scratch was confirmed to be done. An experienced Canva user was invited to the event to spread the capabilities of Canva through his own knowledge  and experience using this application.

During the event

The program began with the introduction to Canva which covers on the functionality of each features on site. This allows the participants to understand the usage of each icons and use them accordingly in different poster designs. The program continued with the exposure of poster templates ranging from various sizes which can be altered to the ideal preference. The theory behind the usage of each poster sizes were also highlighted. Next, the fonts were also the main point in the making of a perfect poster, type of fonts were explained to its respective usability. Formal or informal, each fonts have their own beauty in determining the posters suitability in specific events. For the background of the poster which just might be the backbone in the design itself, colors are vital which plays a role in reflecting to the mood of the event in place. As an example, bright and pastel colors in the background of the posters are the go-to choice in event related to children birthday parties. The final formula towards developing a perfect poster would be the layout of the poster itself. This part is rather tricky as this is where the features of Canva really shines if the method of implementation is successful. The event ends with the a quiz on the whole Canva module together with the announcement of the poster making competition. After days, the submission was received and the winners were announced in the closing ceremony. The program ended with appreciation to the community and the speaker for their own respective cooperation.

Post-event

After the event, a post-mortem meeting was conducted to highlight the flaws in the program. Additionally, the meeting was also conducted to prepare for the report of the whole program. Overall, the feedbacks obtained from the participants were positive. We were glad to be working with the community involved in this program. Canva is definitely an important tool to learn and we have managed to pull it off. From humanitarian contributions to knowledge sharing, engaging the society be conducted at any place any time through a wide range of topics intended. I hope many more teams will be able to establish an impact in the society one community at a time.

I would love to thank the lecturers of the GIG1005 Social Engagement course and the community for the opportunity and support delivered throughout this program. Last but not least, the dedication shown by members of this crew has been phenomenal and I sincerely hope to work with all of you in the future. Final thanks to my team members, Fareez, Ridhwan, Syahmi, Shahid and Zamil for your respective contributions.
